My father used to be more like me. Nice weather meant nothing exceeding 68 F, with grey and rainy a plus. That has changed for him; he is very often cold or chilled. He could do with a knitted vest. And so I knit for him a vest.

I used the pattern called Jeff’s Vest from Morehouse Farm Merino Knits: More than 40 Farm-Fresh Designs.

This is my kind of pattern. Circular. I don’t recall running into any difficulties with it. The stitch pattern does eat up more yarn than would stockinette. That’s okay; the finished vest did not feel too weighty.

Ideally I would have used Morehouse Merino yarn. After much fuss, I decided
on Brown Sheep Nature Spun Worsted. 245 yards for only $5.95. I deliberated
over the color and finally chose Beet Red.

When the box arrived it was a real treat. It was packed with such care
and small niceties that it felt like I had opened a present from a caring
friend. It made my day. It was my first order from Flying Fingers.
I was left with a warm, agreeable impression of that company.

Funny thing, I pictured the vest as more casual than dressy. Of course, it is pictured in the book on a man shearing a Merino ram and looking ruggedly outdoorsy.

I had to smile with surprise when I saw my Dad wearing it with his office attire, with a tie and all. And it looked really good too. He began wearing it two or three times a week! Now that for me is knitterly gratification.
