In the mail was a package, in the package a book:
Lace Style: Traditional to Innovative, 21 Inspired Designs to Knit

I am interested foremost in the pattern called Tailored Scallops.
It is featured on the cover of the book:

The yarn used is Tahki Yarns Kerry, a wool and alpaca blend made in Ireland.
Aha, so I know this yarn.

At some point I ordered one skein of Kerry to see what it was like. Being on sale, it had caught my eye. It was orange and became some stripes when I made the Tubey sweater from Knitty.

Although I very much liked the color, I didn’t form a strong opinion
of the yarn, other than noting that it wasn’t very soft.

Now Webs is having a sale on Kerry with only one available color. I wasn’t ready to commit, and I had other yarn agendas too. When I placed a Webs order, I ended up with a sampling of several yarns. Amongst them was a lone skein of Kerry. The color suited my tastes and I began to knit.

One skein got me this far. Now, inevitably, I am jonesing. And poor Tailored Scallops is on hold. She does not lack lots and lots of company. She does, however, complain of her name and I cannot say I blame her. With some deference to her origins, I’ll rename her Taylor Calliope.

Here and there I have seen some. Still, have you noticed a paucity of sweater coat patterns? Certainly, there is room for more. A cardigan pattern might stand some lengthening. A long-sleeved dress could be steeked. I’m simply not ready for such sleights of hand.

The fact is, I love sweater coats. The one I have is great. I found it second-hand in
Santa Cruz. I am greedy. I mean, it is lonely. It wants a friend.

I was encouraged to find the Flicca pattern.

My Friend Flicka was amongst those books my sister had on her childhood bookshelf. I’d see it there every day. I must be sentimental. The pattern name was a beckoning sign: this purchase is endorsed by familiarity. It seemed indecent and disrespectful to deny it my attentions.

If the pattern had been called Yogi Bear, let’s face it. I’d probably still fall for it. Just not with the same affinity.

My sister had a cloth doll with orange yarn hair, affectionately
called Spaghetti Head. Years later it occurred to us that she
was very likely designed as an Orphan Annie doll. I can’t wait
to see what a Spaghetti Head pattern will look like!

Shh - my sister’s sleeping. Don’t tell her I took this photo!
See, there’s Spaghetti Head on the left.

Aha! A Spaghetti Head pattern just might be a Hallowig, in orange of course.
Such an ultra cool knit idea, that Hallowig. Something went awry on my
attempt. Now I realize I was using the wrong color!
