I am ever on the lookout for cat collars which are highly reflective. The ones with battery powered lights are just not practical! I have yet to find a collar that has all the features I want. I’ve tried using supposedly glow-in-the-dark fabric paint on plain collars but that was not effective. Some collars that claim reflectiveness are useless. They might be adorned with little paws painted in a thin coat of some dubious silver substance which peels off in no time.
One collar does stand out amongst all the others. I found it a few years ago at a posh pampered pet shop in Sausalito. I haven’t seen it since in any store. Fortunately the collar had the company telephone number on it; at that time, they were not sold online. This collar is made by Premier. It has a serious reflective strip sewn onto it. After light hits it, it continues to glow.

This, my favorite collar, does have drawbacks. The reflective strip bends but is fairly rigid. That doesn’t allow for a comfortable fit for the smaller cats. It is also subject to splitting. The problem with that is the sharp edges it creates.
I have wanted to put together a collar myself. There are industrial goods designed to be highly visible, like in constructions zones and on the road in general. A company like 3M has a selection of products for the everyday consumer. What I’m after might only be sold wholesale in mega-quantities. I’ve seen some good gear for biking too. Good means there is a reflective strip that I could envision on a cat collar. I haven’t yet found a source.
What about a knitted collar?
I’ve just learned of this new yarn. It is electroluminescent!

You should make your own! That sounds a great idea. These long winters’ nights (coupled with the terrible driving around here) makes me grateful that my two are fat, lazy housecats.
